A historic city situated in Gwinnett County, approximately 37 miles northeast of Atlanta. Originally inhabited by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, the area saw European settlement in the early 19th century. The community began as Chinquapin Grove, named after the native dwarf chestnut tree, and later became known as “Hoke” in 1891. Due to naming conflicts, the town was renamed “Dacula,” a unique combination of “Decatur” and “Atlanta” . Incorporated in 1905, Dacula has evolved from a cotton farming community into a vibrant city that balances small-town charm with modern growth. As of 2025, Dacula’s population is estimated at 8,152, reflecting steady growth over recent years.
Here are five fun facts about Dacula:
- Musical Heritage: Dacula was home to Gid Tanner & His Skillet Lickers, a renowned 1920s/30s string band that significantly influenced early country and bluegrass music. The band’s legacy continues with performances by Tanner’s descendants.
- Historic Freeman’s Mill: Built between 1868 and 1879, Freeman’s Mill operated into the 1980s and is one of the last remaining gristmills in Gwinnett County. Restored in 2009, it now serves as a historical site within Freeman’s Mill Park.
- Elisha Winn House: Constructed in 1812, the Elisha Winn House is the oldest surviving building in Gwinnett County. It served as the county’s first courthouse and jail and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Little Mulberry Indian Mounds: Located in Little Mulberry Park, these ancient stone mounds are believed to have been constructed by Native American tribes. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Parks-Strickland Archeological Complex.
- Unique Naming Origin: The name “Dacula” is a portmanteau of “Decatur” and “Atlanta,” created to resolve a naming conflict when the original name “Hoke” was rejected by the U.S. Post Office.
Dacula’s rich history, cultural heritage, and commitment to preserving its past while embracing growth make it a unique and inviting place to live or visit.
